Abstract     Lymphedema is a chronic progressive condition resulting from congenital abnormality of, or damage to the lymphatic system. The main reasons are malignancy, trauma, infection and chronic venous insufficiency. It can be diagnosed with clinical history and physical examination only. When in doubt, lymphoscintigraphy should be performed. Other diagnostic methods are useful for assessment of comorbidities or causes of the condition. Treatment of lymphedema is lifelong, and therefore the patient should get complete information about the disease. Prevention of infection and good foot or arm care are necessesary steps: Patients should use some kind of compression garments. Reduction of swelling can be achieved with lymphatic drainage.
