Abstract     Extraintestinal manifestations occur in 25-35% of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). They may appear before the onset of gastrointestinal symptoms, during the course of the disease, or may even follow colectomy in patients with ulcerative colitis. Every organ system can be involved. The pathogenesis of extraintestinal manifestations of IBD s not well understood. Immunological mechanisms are likely to be responsible for most of the common extrainestinal manifestations, influenced by genetic factors. This article provides an overview of the extraintestinal nanifestations in IBD, emphasizing musculoskeletal manifestations.
