Abstract     Pain represents an essential adaptive and survival function of the human organism, but at the same time it is also a leading cause of patients' suffering, be it as a of various illnesses in which it leads to a decline in the quality of life, or iatrogenic, as a result of diagnostic therapeutic procedures. Regardless of its aetiology, chronic pain can become independent of peripheral stimuli, caused and maintained by abnormal activation synapses in the central nervous system. To prevent it is necessary to be aware of the characteristics functioning of the pain system, be attentive to the patient's condition, and use appropriate means to reducute or chronic pain. The advancement of scientific insight into the basic mechanisms of pain and its role in health and disease will provide the basis for the development of effective new means of alleviating pain.
