Abstract     Chronic and recurrent pain in children and adolescents is defined as continuing or recurrent pain that lasts for a period of more than three months and is severe enough to affect a child's activities. Research on chronic and recurrent pain has expanded dramatically over the past decade, but most paediatric research has been based on pain in specific illnesses such as JIA, migraine headache and recurrent abdominal pain. The quality of life of a child or adolescent with significant pain is markedly diminished and this affects the whole family. Pain involves many neuronal systems often organized into complex networks. The aetiology of pain can be tissue damage from localized injury or inflammation or from stimulation of the central nervous system. Treatment of chronic pain in children is based on rosearch findings in adults, although children and adolescents suffer from different pain disorders to those seen in adults. There is an urgent need for higher quality clinical trials to establish the efficacy of empirical used drugs and to discover safe and effective alternatives. New approaches to paediatric pain have crossed disciplinary boundaries. Pain, especially in conjunction with developmental issues is clearly too complex to be understood by one discipline or by using one set of analytical tools. Multidisciplinary teams, comprising physicians, psychologists, nurses and other health professionals, and scientists have led the advances in chronic and recurrent pain research and management. Many children and adolescents may experience pain that could be successfully managed with medical, psychological and rehabilitative assistance.
