Abstract     Like the more developed countries, Slovenia is also faced with demands for increasing the funds for health services. Its population is aging while the development of medical science enables the treatment of conditions for which there was previously no solution, and the costs of the procedures are increasing. The state of health in Slovenia is comparable with that in economically more developed European countries, and the same is true of the capacities of the health service. The Slovene health care and insurance systems also correspond to EU criteria. We merely need to change the regulations dealing with medical aids and appliances as well as with absenteeism. Efficiency and cost control as well as the transparency of procedures should be increased, the matter of price formation and the question of long waiting periods for diagnostic and surgical procedures in hospitals settled. Every EU member can keep its regulations or legislature regarding health care, since the principle of subsidiarity is valid for this field. Therefore the system of health insurance for children and adolescents does not need to be changed on account of Slovenia joining the EU.
