Abstract     General approach to a child and adolescent with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) undergoing endoscopic procedures is described. Endoscopic diagnostic procedueres are performed when clinical picture, laboratory data and specific immunological data suggest the presence of IBD. Endoscopic procedures enable us to directly visualize damage and to obtain samples for histo-pathological studies, needed for the definite diagnosis. Endoscopic procedures are preformed by gastroenterologist who are assisted by trained nurse. It is nurses responsibility to proper psychological and physical preparation of a patient for the procedure and for the nursing care after the procedure. It is important to have parents involved, who must sign a written consent for a procedure. Based on the medical and nursing documentation, discussion with members of the nursing and medical team, individual interview with parents and a adolescent, as well as constant follow-up of vital functions, patients psycho-physical status and needs are determined. A nurse is responsible for developing and implementation of nursing plan, its evaluation, documentation and reports. Nurse must ensure all the material needed for endoscopy is available and functioning properly prior to any endoscopic procedure. Background of the underlying disease its signs and anatomical details, as well as contraindications for endoscopy and its complications must be familiar to the nurse assisting in procedure. Trained nurse must also know the effect of any prescribed medication, normal values pulmonary and cardiovascular parameters obtained during the procedure, and also measures in case of any pathology. It is also the responsibility of a nurse to properly handle the tissue samples from the moment of biopsy to the final transport to the Histo-pathology Department, which includes keeping all the necessary documentation regarding the procedure.
