Abstract | Pregnancy is associated with profound respiratory changes: alveolar ventilation increases by 30-40%, largely as a result of the increased tidal volume, vital capacity and residual volume are increased, too, while the breathing frequency and FEV, remain unchanged. To allow effective gaseous exchange across the placenta the maternal pco2 must be lower than the fetal pco2 and so the maternal respiratory center is reset, probably as an effect of progesterone. Because of the increased resting oxygen requirements and the increased work of breathing there is decreased availability for the performance of aerobic exercise during pregnancy. Thus maximum exercise performance is decreased. | |
