Abstract     The quality in health service is gaining in importance as a management condition. In the USA the external audit of hospitals began approximately 50 years ago. Other countries of the world started to take interest in the quality of the health service only after 1990. In Slovenia the initiatives of intruducing quality systems have been followed with delay. The project "Quality of Healt Service in Slovenia", in which hospital doctors, general practitioners and dentists were included, started in 1999 under the lead of the Medical Chamber of Slovenia (Zdravniška zbornica Slovenije). As it turned out, project motivation is the highest in hospitals, substantially lower among the general practitioners and almost insignificant among the dentists. The Ministry of Health began to prepare a project of external audit of hospitals in October 2001. Regarding introducing the quality standards, health centres still do not have an external motivator. The health centre Slovenska Bistrica took the decision to organise its management according to the standard requirements ISO 9001: 2000 in the year 2001, at which time some attempts to organise and connect as a whole some areas according to standard requirements were made. However, the work turned out to be too complicated to achieve any important goals. In 2002 a thorough situation analysis was carried out and the plans for the future prepared. In 2003 a skeleton plan for the project on quality was prepared with the help of an external co-worker. The project started in the beginning of 2004 and is finishing step by step in this year. First of all, the project manager and menagement representative for quality were appointed and then a project group and directors quality team formed. (Abstract trunacted at 2000 characters)
