Abstract     As the leading public pharmacy institute in the Gorenjska region and as the third largest in Slovenia, Gorenjske lekarne meets permanent challenges on how to improve its own business and how to keep a step in front of the competition. The upcoming changes in the environment have increased the awareness about the bigger competitiveness and as a result the business must be improved. One of the results is the project of the introduction and maintenance of the integrated management system. The activities of the integrated management system project have started in autumn 2002, the system itself was introduced in June 2003 and the certification audit was held in February 2004. After the first surveillance in March 2005, the auditors concluded that Gorenjske lekarne made a big progress in the understanding of international standards. The auditors keep emphasizing that organizations should not prepare themselves on audits but should rather complete activities in the direction of their mission and/or vision. In the last year, Gorenjske lekarne started following the processes from the suppliers through our pharmacies to our customers for this reason. Outside consultants helped a lot by capturing the existent processes on paper. Together we found out that in many processes, only positive decisions were defined (if the batch is confirmed, what is the next step). Because there are two symbols in the computer world, O and I, it was necessary to define a suitable negative decision (if the batch is not confirmed, what is then the next step) at every positive decision. By doing that, the processes of ordering storage, production and sales were optimised. The implementation of the optimised processes with the belonging informatisation is the plan for the next few years.
