Abstract     The illness and death are caused by the use of tobacco and by exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. There was a lot of trying to limit tobacco use in the history without any success. Not earlier than last few decades in developed countries they succeeded to reduce the use of tobacco products due to cognition about huge number of toxic tobacco components, their influence on human health and nicotin addiction. In the developed countries they took the measures to reduce tobacco use on the country level and to help smokers who are addicted. They created legislation that covered tobacco products sale, advertising, labeling, assessment, smoke free places and tobacco cessation. Slovenia has been relatively successful in combating tobacco epidemic but there is still need to be more active on this field. The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control is the worlds first treaty on public health very important especially for developing countries which have no legislation on tobacco control yet. It is very important for every country to contain on one hand the measures for the restriction of tobacco consumption and on the other hand the measures for the prevention of harmful effects of tobacco consumption and to help smokers guit.
