Abstract     In transplant recipients viral infections importantly influence their survival and morbidity. The current improvements in our knowledge of immune suppression and different viral infections, that can emerge in these patients greatly improves the management of immunocompromised individuals. Since effective treatment of some viral infections is available and new antiviral agents appear constantly, rapid and accurate diagnosis of viral infections is increasingly important. Close virological monitoring of immunocompromised patients helps us to identify patients who are at greater risk to develop a clinically evident disease. This can be eventually prevented by using preemptive therapy approach. In addition, preemptive therapy approach allows reduction of side effects of antiviral treatment, emergence of resistant viral strains and the cost of treatment.
