Abstract     Despite ongoing refinements in immunosupressive agents, graft preservation, and surgical techniques, infection remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in renal trans plant recipients. Infections related to transplant surgical complications or to postoperative nosocomial, opportunistic, or community acquired pathogens can affect graft function and transplant outcome. Graft rejection leads to augmented immunosupression, increasing the risk of infection with immunomodulating viruses. The infectious issues in kidney transplant recipients, posttransplant infection prophylaxis, and the recognition of common and emerging infectious syndromes with appropriate antimicrobial therapy to minimize allograft damage are reviewed.
