Abstract     Exposure of lung graft to external environment makes lung transplant patients especially prone to infections. Bacterial agents are often resistant to antimicrobials because of intensive treatment of donors before explantation and frequent antimicrobial treatment of recipients before transplantation. Molds present in inhaled air often cause invasive infections of bronchial anastomoses and lung parenchima. Respiratory viruses and cytomegalovirus are common among viral infections in lung transplant patients. Viral infection may contribute to the development of bronchiolitis obliterans, a type of rejection. On the other hand, bronchiolitis obliterans itself predisposes to viral infections. Special attention is needed in management of infections in lung transplant patients with cystic fibrosis.
