Abstract     Transplantation has emerged as one of the remarkable achievements of the latter half of the twentieth century for treatment of many end-stage organ disorders. Survival in pediatric solid organ transplantation continues to improve as strategies for immunosuppression, prevention, and treatment of infectious complications progress. Despite continuously improving results, infection remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in pediatric transplant recipients. Factors that predispose to infectious complications after solid organ transplantation can be identified and divided into factors found before, during, or after transplantation. Whereas some microbial agents are more pathogenic to one type of organ transplant, similarities in the types of infections are found regardless of the particular organ transplanted. This article provides an overview of infectious complications after pediatric transplantation. Transplantation of solid organs in children in Slovenia are described.
