Abstract     The history of knowledge and use of plants is part of the human race's cultural history and reaches far back into the past. The life of humans used to be closely associated with them. They were their first food, and through experience they learned that many plants were edible, medicinal, harmful or even poisonous. Amongst some 3,000 vascular plants occurring in Slovenia there are about 250, which are poisonous, some 500 are considered suitable as food, while about 500 plant species are medicinal. Poisonous plants contain toxic substances, which may cause fatal changes in the organisms of the people consuming these plants. Wild edible plants can be consumed as vegetables, may be used for teas, juices and marmalades, they have edible fruits and hypogenous parts, and may also be used as herbs and spices. Medicinal plants, as the oldest kind of medicaments, can be used for the prevention and treatment of illnesses as well as for the mitigation of various health troubles.
