Abstract     As travel to developing countries increases, travellers are at risk for illness from a variety of infectious agents and environmental hazards. Depending on the travel destination, travellers may be exposed to a number of infectious diseases; exposure depends on the presence of infectious agents in the area. The risk of becoming infected will vary according to the purpose of the trip and the itinerary, accommodation, hygiene and sanitation and the behaviour and activities of the traveller and his health status. Infectious diseases are among other health risks of most concern also for travellers to the high altitude. Many of the risks and much of the morbidity can be decreased by adequate pre-travel preparation. Traveller should get enough information and advice on immunisations, malaria protection, prevention of traveller's diarrhoea and other preventive measures before departure to any destination where there is a signihcant risk of exposure. These general precautions should be taken regardless of whether any vaccinations or medication have been administered.
