Abstract     Expeditions often take place in conditions which are demanding in terms of climate, terrain and the nature of the activities undertaken. Medical care on expeditions demands a high degree of planning and organisation. It is necessary for physicians who deal with patients traveling to be familiar with the potential diseases and other medical conditions to which such traveler might be exposed. Advice on immunisations, malaria prophylaxis, travel medical kit, prevention and selttreatment of travelers diarrhea and other preventive measures must be given before travel. In the sccond part of the article the most frequent medical conditions in high altitude areas are presented with the emphasy on infectious diseases.
