Abstract     Status epilepticus is a seizure, which persists for a sufficient length of time or is repeated frequently enough that a recovery between attacks does not occur. There are different clinical forms in all age groups and etiology varies. The most common form is generalized convulsive status epilepticus with tonic or tonic-clonic or clonic seizures. Convulsive status epilepticus is also a major neurological emergency, which requires prompt recognition and management, otherwise neurological deterioration is possible and also higher mortality. In the early stage of the generalized convulsive status epilepticus the patient is unconscious and has convulsive seizures. After 30. minutes, a late or a refractory status epilepticus develops; the patient is still unconscious and has only subtle motor manifestations. A child with prolonged convulsions is critically ill, so effective management should include stabilization of respiratory and cardiovascular functions and use of specific anticonvulsive drugs while initial diagnostic measures are conducted simultaneously.
