Abstract		The present work deals with specific standpoints for the understanding of old age and the dynamics of the aging process. The present situation in Slovenia and elsewhere is linked to the historical process in Europe as the whole. Theoretical basis and the complexity of the process in the frames of socio-cultural space are described in detail, as well as social contacts and relations, deriving from the interactions of the individual and his/her integration in the social environment. The research work deals with social capital, competencies in old age, learning and stess coping strategies. Stereotypes and some less frequent phenomena like loneliness, isolation and fear in old age. The empirical part studies the impact of individual dimensions on health and social relationss and tries to find confirmation of the existence of correlational relations among them.
