Abstract     Although Slovenia does not have a Mental Health Act, the reasons for involuntary admission to psychiatric hospital are defined in legislation on health care and health insurance. For every involuntary admission three main reasons most be present: the patient due to mental disorder severely threatens his or her life (suicidality) or life of other persons (aggression) or severely harms himself or herself in other ways (for example, the patient spends a lot of money in mania). However, it is not always easy to evaluate the presence and severity of above-mentioned reasons. Therefore research on this problem is important, although relatively rare. The aim of the study was to assess the characteristics of patients who were admitted involuntarily to University Psychiatric Hospital Ljubljana, Slovenia in February and March 2005. We included all patients, admitted to closed admission wards. We have recorded demographic and disease-related data with special emphasis on evaluation of disease severity (measured with Clinical Global Impression) and functioning (measured with Global Assessment of Functioning). the group of involuntarily patients was compared to all other patients using chi-square and t-tests. Involuntarily admitted patients had more frequent suicidal behaviour, greater severity of disorder and poorer functioning while the two groups did not differ in gender and diagnosis.
