Abstract     We analyzed the characteristics, treatment and outcome of patients presented to the medical emergency department in the University Medical Centre Ljubljana for accident hypothermia. 42 patients with a temperature below 35,9 C were terated between September 1st 2003 and March 15th 2005. The mean age of the patients was 59 years and the mean temperature at admission 30,4 C. The most frequent cause of hypothermia was intoxication. Two thirds of patients were found outdoors, one third was found indoors. Four patients had a cardiac arrest (one ventricular fibrillation, three asystole), all of them had severe hypothermia (temperature below 28 C). 5 patients died. Patients were rewarmed passively and actively with heat blankets and warmed IV fluids. We used extracorporeal blood warming in severely hypothermic patient with resistant ventricular fibrillation.
