Abstract     Toxicity of petroleum and petroleum distillates depends on route of exposure (ingestion, inhalation, dermal), physical and chemical characteristics (aliphatic, aromatic, halogenated) and the presence of toxic additives (e.g. lead). The case report presents a 68-year-old man, who fainted when he was mending an oil storage tank at home. He was agitated, amnesic and disoriented to place and time on clinical examination. His wife explained that he had been absent for two hours and returned wet and dirty with oil, especially on the face. He was taken to hospital and after further examination admitted to the intesive care unit.
