Abstract     Incidence of salmonellosis in Pomurje region increased in year 2003 compared to years 1999 - 2002. Possible causes and possibilities for prevention are discussed. Reported cases of human salmonellosis in Pomurje region were: 1999 - 249 cases, 2000 - 202 cases, 2001 - 156 cases, 2002 - 215 cases, 2003 - 535 cases. Compared with the average between years 1999 - 2002, prevalence increased by 158% in year 2003. Number of outbreaks also increased, from an average of 0.75 outbreaks per year in previous years, to 4 outbreaks per year in 2003. All 4 outbreaks were small, between 10 and 43 persons were exposed. Epidemiological association between human cases and suspicious food was found. In 2003, serotype S. Enteritidis was isolated in 94% and S. typhimurium in 3 % of patients. Number of patients with Salmonella sepsis also increased in 2003. In outbreaks, insufficient consideration of good hygienic practice was found. Poultry meat, eggs and from eggs and poultry prepared food were involved in outbreaks of salmonellosis. Prevention measures can be applied on different levels: 1. Education of general population to use good hygienic practice in preparation of food. 2. HACCP system, strictly followed and with systematic inspections. 3. Measures to decrease prevalence of salmonellosis in poultry and other animals.
