Abstract     Background: Modern clinical principles of tooh preparation for fixed prosthodontic treatment include polishing of rough surfaces. Polishing of coarse ground tooth substance substantially improves the fit of the crown to the abutment tooth. It is especially important to polish the irregular preparation margin. Materials and methods: From the labial surfaces of extracted maxillary central incisors, square pieces were cut out, grinded to a flat surface using a rough torpedo-shaped diamond bur, and then polished using three different burs: diamond polishing bur, EVA system and carbide polishing bur. Profilometry was used to determine surface roughness. Scanning electron microscopy was used for imaging cut surfaces. Results: Carbide bur created much smoother dentinal surfaces than the other two polishing instruments. All three instruments produced significantly smoother dentinal surfaces compared to surfaces created by initial grinding. Conclusion: The study justifies the need for polishing cut dentinal surfaces. The choice of the polishing system depends on the luting agent used for cementing, as well as on the presence of intact teeth next to the prepared tooth, on the precision of clinical work, and on the clinicians experience with the polishing instrument.
Summary     Izhodišče: Sodobna klinična načela priprave zob za različna fiksnoprotetična sidra vključujejo tudi poliranje. Glajenje dentina po brušenju zoba z grobimi svedri omogoča boljše naleganje prevleke in manjšo gingivalno špranjo. Zlasti pomembna je zagladitev roba gingivalne stopnice. Materiali in metode: Iz labialnih ploskev ekstrahiranih zgornjih srednjih sekalcev smo izrezali ploščice, jih z grobim svedrom zbrusili do dentina v ravno površino in nato polirali s tremi različnimi polirnimi instrumenti: z diamantnim polirnikom, s sistemom EVA in karbidnim polirnikom. Profilometrično smo določili hrapavost dentinske površine in jo dokumentirali z vrstično elektronsko mikroskopijo. Rezultati: Od preverjanih polirnikov pušča najmanjšo hrapavost karbidni polirnik. Razlike v hrapavosti dentina, obrušenega in spoliranega z različnimi instrumenti, so statistično značilne.
