Abstract     Echocardiography is recognized as golden standard for the detection of hypertensive cardiac outcomes such as left ventricular hypertrophy and diastolic dysfunction. It excels the electrocardiography in sensitivity by up to 6 times. Echocardiography makes the numeric assessment of left ventricular mass and the differentiation of various geometric patterns of hypertensive left ventricular remodeling possible. Both findings have a prognostic significance. Unfortunately, considering high prevalence of hypertension, the accessibility of echocardiography in Slovenia remains unsatisfactory. The clinical conditions in which echocardiography is strongly recommended are stated at the end of the article.
