Abstract     The use of anticoagulants, warfarin and heparins, for treatment and prevention of thrombembolic events, in the world and Slovenia, is increasing. This treatment is demanding, especially among the elderly with concommitant diseases and different medication. The paper presents results of patients with important side effects of anticoagulation treatment, significant gastrointestinal hemorrhage in a ten-year period. The risk of gastrc»ntestinal hemorrhage increases, when patients are taking drugs that influence pharmacological characteristics and effects of anticoagulants. Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs and antiaggregants significantly increase the risk of gastrointestinal hemorrhage. The role of general practitioners in treating, prescribing different drugs and control of management in patients with anticoagulation treatment, is stressed out.
