Abstract     The total number of end-stage renal disease patients treated by renal replacement therapy had increased from 1661 on December 31st 2003 to 1745 on December 31st 2004 (5.1% increase). 68.9% of these patients were treated by hemodialysis, 7.2% by peritoneal dialysis and 23.9% had functioning renal graft. The patients were treated in 19 dialysis centers and one transplant center. The number of prevalent patients treated by renal replacement therapy per one million population was 879 at the end of 2004. The number of incident (new) patients in 2004 was 157 per one million population. The gross mortality rate of dialysis patients was stable throughout the years and reached 12.6% in 2004. 50% of new patients starting hemodialysis were 65 years old and 29.2% were diabetics. Epoetin therapy was prescribed in 91% of dialysis patients. The number of patients positive for the hepatitis B or hepatitis C virus was stable and low (2.7% of all dialysis patients).
