Abstract     Ischemic mitral regurgitation is mitral regurgitation due to complications of coronary artery disease, in particular, myocardial infarction. Its presence is associated with excessive mortality in the course of time independently of baseline characteristics and degree of ventricular dysfunction. The mortality risk is related directly to the degree of ischemic mitral regurgitation. Echocardiographic assessment of mitral regurgitation requires an integrated approach, combinig multiple parameters from two dimensional, colour Doppler, and spectral Doppler modalities. With comprehensive approach, valve morphology, severity of regurgitation, and evidence of hemodynamic sequele can be determined. Therefore, ischemic mitral regurgitation detection and quantification by means of echocardiography provide major information for risk stratification and cfinical decision making in the chronic coronary artery disease and/or postmyocardial infarction patients.
