Abstract     Chlamydia pneumoniae is a recently discovered bacteria, which causes mainly respiratory tract infections. Rarely it also causes myocarditis, and there are three case reports of pericarditis with effusion. We can confirm acute infection with C. pneumoniae by serologic studies, in cell culture and by detection of bacterial DNA by PCR techniques. We present patients who have been treated in our institution in the last four years because of pneumonia caused by C. pneumoniae with associated pericarditis and pericardial effusion. Three of five patients required pericardiocentesis and evacuation of pericardial effusion. One patient was successfully resuscitated because of the cardiac tamponade and cardiorespiratory arrest immediately after the admission to the ward. In all our patients we confirmed infection with C. pneumoniae by serologic studies. Antibiotic treatment with macrolid antibiotics and kinolones was successful in all cases.
