Abstract     Even if some patients test their blood glucose regulary, they can not have enough iformations about their typical day and night blood glucose values. The new system CGMS, or Continuous Blood - Glucose Monitoring, offer much more information with its 288 blood - glucose readings per day. Through a small, fexibile platinum electrode coated with the enzyme glucose oxidase within a semi - permeable membrane the system acquires electronic signals from the glucose reaction from interstitial fluid, which are converted into glucose values. When the data is downloaded to a computer, software generates graphs and pie charts that paint a startlingly clear portrait of blood - glucose changes. CGMS seems to be most often used by people on insulin pumps, but it may be equally helpful for people, who use multiple injections and / or oral agents, for teens and children, for women planning to become or already pregnant (with type 1 and 2 diabetes). Recommended applications CGMS: - when a person has a high A1C haemoglobin - when results of a person do not correspondent with traditional blood - glucose self - monitoring results - when unexplained blood - glucose excursions occur - when there is a need to control blood glucose really accurate, such as during a pregnancy. Results and experiances of our hospitalstaff are really very good: the CGMS offers patients with diabetes an unprecedented oppourtunity to see, what their blood glucose values are throughout the day. This insight will help patients and physicians determine patterns of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia that may have been undetected, allowing patients to make changes to their diabetes management program.
