Abstract     Portal Hypertension with its main sequel, gastroesophageal varices, represents one of he most provocative problems in the modern Hepatology and Gastroenterology. Half of he deaths due to gastrointestinal hemorrhage are coused by bleeding from esophagogastric varices. Rebleeding will occur in 50-80% during the first 6 months with an associated mortality rate of 30 -70%. Endoscopic sclerotherapy was accepted as the treatment of choice for stopping active variceal bleeding and preventing bleeding. Twenty years ago, betabloekers were precribed to prevent variceal bleeding and rebleeding(1). Today, the treatment of choice is still based on endoscopy but elastic band ligation is introduced (1,2,3,5) with less complication. In our hospital we introduced this method in 1997 as an eradication therapy for esophageal varices after first bleeding. In 2001 we began to use this method selectively for acute bleeding. Until now we cured 34 patients and performed 105 procedures. With two of the patients we repited ligation with the combination of scleroterapy to reach eradication of varices.
