Abstract     Introduction: In our time breastfeeding is a symbol of good motherhood. It is very important to explore contemporary issues connected with prevalent motherhood figure. Discussion: Pregnancy, childbirth and baby feeding have to be seen as complex social processes. In the medical sciences we often meet biological accounts on that processes. We have to go beyond this and examine social processes too, which are liked together with biological ones. Contemporary discourses and practices connected with breastfeeding are focusing on children. We have to be more centered on women's rights. Conclusions: In every concept of motherhood there are possibilities for the liberalization or subordination - and they can be found in the contemporary breastfeeding discourses. It is important to explore how women can create their own ways for special and unique motherhood.
