Abstract     The correlation between nutrition and health or diseases is well known. The patient's nutrition status could directly influence morbidity, mortality, course and acuity of diseases, complication incidence and recovery from diseases, surgery and injuries. High-quality medical treatment is patient-oriented and includes nutritional care as an integral part of therapy and health care. Medical nutrition therapy and nutritional care for an individual patient are getting more and more significance. In some countries, medical nutrition therapy has been well recognized and is already involved in health insurance system. It is mainly performed by clinical dietitians or dietitians. Hospital malnutrition in Slovenia is a great problem that has not been considered to the same extent as in other countries involved in the project of the Council of Europe: "Food and nutritional care in hospitals". Action plans for populations with special nutritional needs in The National Food and Nutrition Action Plan for Slovenia for 2005 - 2010 are intended to improve the present situation of hospital malnutrition in Slovenia.
