Abstract     The importance of appropriate nutrition in the critically ill infants and children is stressed. Different methods of estimation of caloric needs in paediatric intensive care are listed showing large variability. Intravenous feeding, with early introduction of enteral feeding, is still the prevailing way of feeding critically ill newborns and children. Different ways of enteral feeding of critically ill newborns and children are described. The comparison of the recent trends in nutrition of the critically ill adults and infants is presented, particularly in the use of glutamine, arginine and insulin in hyperglycaemia.
