Abstract     For many years, isolation in tissue culture was considered the test of choice for laboratory diagnosis of Chlamydia trachomatis infection. Introduction of non-culture tests, such as direct immunofluorescence and enzymeimmunoassay for detection of chlamydia antigens in clinical specimens, made chlamydia diagnostic tests more widely available. Recently introduced molecular assays turned out to be more sensitive as culture methods and offer a better approach for the rapid detection of these pathogens. The broad spectrum of established and well evaluated commercial test systems for molecular detection of C trachomatis has yet been created for routine use in clinical microbiology laboratories. The major targets for amplification based tests against C. trachomatis are generally the cryptic chlamydial plasmid or rRNA. We can conclude that molecular diagnostic techniques which use PCR have proven to be an important tool for the rapid etiologic diagnosis of C. trachomatis infections.
