Abstract		The aim of our study was to evaluate the starting position and outcome of elderly patients who underwent surgery for gastric cancer. Retrospective examination of 13 years period prospectively formed database (1992-2004) was performed and statistically compared between the groups of elderly and younger patients. Important differences were found regarding the gender, capability for surgery as well as the type of surgery performed. Despite comparable postoperative morbidity there was a shorter 5 years survival and greater postoperative mortality in the elderly group. Surgical treatment for gastric cancer in elderly patient should be adjusted individually regarding the patients biological age.
