Abstract     Background: In treatment of the patient with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is important to follow the patient's physical capacity with appropriate testing, which is not complicated and quickly feasible. The six minute walk test (6-MWT) and incremental shuttle walk test (SWT) belong to this kind of tests. The testing of physical capacity in patient with COPD is described. In the first part theoretical approach is presented. The second part is a study of comparison the 6-MWT and SWT in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Aim: The study desires to answer the questions if the patients in both tests achieve a same level of workload and if exists a relation between pulmonary function of the patient and achieved workload. The SWT is probably too tiring for patients with severe weakness, so it is most suitable to use 6-MWT for those patients. The patients with less weakness are not enough loading with 6-MWT, so the SWT probably is more suitable for those patients. The study foresees that patients with better pulmonary function can walk longer distance, so the SWT is more appropriate for them. Methods: Patients with moderate COPD performed cycle ergometry, both walk tests- 6-MWT and SWT. Both tests were performed twice. Before and after each test patients defined their degree of dispnea and fatigue on legs on Borg's scale. The measures of degree of dispnea with Medical Research Council (MRC) scale were performed. Results: 23 patients were suitable for testing. The comparison in tests regarding on dispneja and fatigue did not show statistically significant difference except in patients with moderate COPD. It is better to use 6-MWT or SWT than cycle ergometry for patients with moderate COPD. In the second perform of 6-MWT and SWT patients walked longer distance than in first one.
