Abstract     In the paper we describe the pathophysiology, clinical picture and new methods of treatment of hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) of the newborn. During resuscitation of neonates with HIE, the importance of the prevention of hyperoxia and - during intensive care - of hypocapnia and hyperglycaemia is stressed. In the treatment of HIE promising results have been published on mild to moderate early head and whole body hypothermia. The potential effect of therapeutic hypothermia is also a widening of the therapeutic window for different drugs. Among these erythropoietin seems to be the most promising.
