Abstract     The article deals with the impact of incorrect placental function and placental morbidity on fetal brain damage. The basics of anatomy and physiology of the placenta are described. The possibilities of examining and recognizing placental pathology by prenatal ultrasound are set out. Doppler examination as a screening and diagnostic method in normal and pathological pregnancy are highlighted. The histopathological descriptions of alterations in the placenta that can be connected with reduced uteroplacental blood flow are also presented.
