Abstract     The article reviews the method for qualitative assessment of general movements as a novel diagnostic tool for early detection of brain dysfunction in fetuses, newborns and young infants. It comprises the history of the method, its theoretical basis, recording technique, the reliability, validity, sensitivity, specificity, predictive value, and its comparison with other techniques of neurological examinations of infants. The method consists of an assessment of the quality of a particular type of spontaneous movements, the so-called general movements. They are the most frequently occurring and the most complex spontaneous movement patterns in fetuses, newborns and young infants. It is an excellent method for predicting later neurological outcome at the very early age of three months. Normal quality of general movements at that age predicts the later normal neurological outcome. Abnormal quality or absence of general movements have clinical significance for predicting later neurological impairment.
