Abstract     Using ultrasound the neonatal brain can be examined routinely as early as in the first few hours after birth, as long as the large fontanelle remains open to serve as an acoustic window. The paper presents 6 standard coronary sections, 5 sagittal and 3 axial sections as well as their ultrasonographic anatomic characteristics. Alternative approaches through the posterior fontanelle, the mastoid and lambdoid suture are not included. The routine ultrasound protocol also includes the representative images of intracranial structures, allowing the comparison of results obtained by individual researchers.
