Abstract     The cleft causes untightness of the mouth cavity and so it diminishes its functional effectiveness. If the morphogenesis of the cleft is both functional and formative adaption of the affected mouth cavity to the disturbance which the cleft would represent in pumping the amniotic fluid, then the functional adaption of the upper part of the mouth cavity will be seen in the morphological characteristics of this area in newborns. The purpose of our research work was to establish the morphological characteristics of the upper part of the mouth cavity in newborns with the isolated cleft palate and to compare it to the characteristics in newborns without the cleft. The work is based on 56 casts of the upper part of the mouth cavity of 56 newborns with the isolated cleft palate of different extents. The characteristics are evaluated by the trigonometric analysis of these casts and compared to already known characteristics of the upper part of the mouth cavity of newborns without the cleft. The comparison shows that palates of the newborns with isolated cleft palate are more elevated and shorter in sagittal direction. The differences are more distinctive if the hard palate is more affected by the cleft. The described difference could be explained as the functional adaption of the mouth cavity with the cleft which becomes more tight with the elevation of the palate because of less passable nose cavity.
