Abstract     The 17beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases (17beta-HSDs) have important roles in the regulation of steroid hormone actions through their catalysis of the oxidation or reduction of estrogens and androgens at position 17. To date, 11 different human 17beta-HSDs have been described Dysfunction of the human 17beta-HSDs results in reproduction disorders and neuronal diseases, and in the development of hormonedependent cancers. This review summarizes current knowledge on the medical implications of the 17beta-HSDs and presents some representative inhibitors of the different 17beta-HSD isozymes.
Summary     17beta-hidroksisteroid-dehidrogenaze (17beta-HSD) katalizirajo oksidacijo ali redukcijo estrogenov in androgenov na mestu 17 steroidnega skeleta in s tem uravnavajo aktivnost steroidnih hormonov. Do danes je bilo pri človeku odkritih že 11 različnih tipov 17beta-HSD. Nepravilno delovanje teh encimov vodi do motenj v razvoju, do bolezni centralnega živčnega sistema, ali v razvoj številnih rakavih obolenj. Ta članek opisuje vse znane človeške 17beta-HSD, njihov pomen in vpletenost v razvoj bolezni ter predstavlja nekatere inhibitorje posameznih izooblik.
