Abstract     Surgical treatment of morbid obesity gives better long-term results than classical approach to lose weight, but it requires a well informed and motivated patient, who is willing and able to change his life style. A psychologist assesses the patient before the procedure and follows him up after. Morbid obesity is associated with eating disorders (binge eating) and depression that should be treated. Relative contraindications to bariatric surgery are actual or untreated psychosis and substance abuse. After the procedure a psychologist supports the patient to achieve the goals and to prevent relapses with techniques that help change and maintain healthy behaviour related to the problem of obesity.
