Abstract     Hiatal hernia is a dislocation of abdominal viscera into the chest through the esophageal hiatus. Hernias are classified into four types. Type I hernia and GERD are closely related and are dealt with together. Other types have a tendency to enlarge, increasing the rate of complications. Therapy is therefore instituted upon diagnosis and is always surgical, either classical or laparoscopic. The article presents the classification, clinics and diagnostics of hiatal hernias. We review ten cases of laparoscopic hernia correction at our department. Classic and laparoscopic approaches are compared.
