Abstract     Laparoscopic gastric surgery is gaining more and more widespread acceptance. In this article, latest findings and study results on minimal invasive surgery for benign and malignant tumors of the stomach, perforated gastric ulcers, and pyloromyotomy are summarized. As in other abdominal procedures, short-term benefits of the laparoscopic vs. open gastric surgery were confirmed, eg. less postoperative pain and complications, quicker recovery and less scarring. Beside higher cost, the major disadvantage of laparoscopic surgery of the stomach remains longer duration of the procedure; however, this could be overcome by greater experience of the surgeon. The major drawback of laparoscopic gastrectomy for cancer is the doubt whether it is equivalently radical compared to open surgery. Some authors that laparoscopic approach should be reserved for early-stage lesions only. There are few studies on long.term survival of laparoscopically operated patients with gastric cancer, so further research is needed.
