Abstract     Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), the most common mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract, is a distinct tumor entity, different from smooth muscle and nerve sheath tumors of the digestive system. GISTs are characterized by the expression of CD117/KIT, which can be detected by immunohistochemistry. The identification of mutations of KIT protooncogene in many GISTs has resulted in a better understanding of their oncogenic mechanisms. Since an effective specific biologic treatment is now available, the diagnosis of GIST must be accurate. This paper briefly reviews the biological, pathological and clinical features of GIST.
