Abstract     The diploma thesis introduces on a theoretical basis the importance of quality of nutrition support and care in patients with cancer. The thesis describes metabolic changes in cancer cachexia and complex causes of weight loss in patients. The criteria for recognition of undernutrition and methods to identify undernourished patients or patient at risk for undernutrition in hospitals are defined. Nutrition interventions to maintain the nutritional and functional status of the body during the stress caused by cancer and during specific cancer treatments are presented. Possible ways to administer nutrients are described and benefits of enteral nutrients administration to patients' functional maintenance and better quality of life are emphasized. In the last part of the thesis, a case study of nutritional screening and assessment with internationaHy recognized tool: Nutritional Risk Screening 2002, that is used at the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana is presented.
