Abstract | Background. The musculoskeletal diseases represent due to their frequency a great public health problem in Slovenia, but their prevalence was not precisely estimated so far. Aim. To identify population groups at risk of musculoskeletal disorders and diseases. Hypothesis. The research hypotheses were as follows: musculoskeletal disorders and diseases are more frequent with women, elder adults, lower educated population, heavy industry workers, members of lower social classes, residents of rural community and residents of East Slovenia. Methods. The data originate from the national survey carried out in late spring 2001 on health behavior of 15.379 adults aged 25-64. The overall response rate of the mailed questionnaire was 64%, with 9.043 questionnaires being eligible for analysis. Binary multiple logistic regression was used to determine the impact of sex, age, education, employment, self-assessed social class, type of residence community and geographical region on the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders and diseases. Results. The results showd that low back pain is the greatest threat to: women, aged 50-59, to population with finished primary education, agricultural and heavy industry workers, members of lower or working class, and to residents of East Slovenia. Neck and shoulder pain are the greatest threat to: women, aged 50-59, population with finished primary education, pensioners, unemployed or industry workers, members of lower social class, residents of suburban community and to residents of East Slovenia. Other joint pains are the greatest threat to: women, aged 60-64, population with finished primary education, unemployed, agricultural or industry workers, members of working class, residents of urban or rural community and to residents of East slovenia.
