Abstract     The aim of the study was to find biliary and arterial variations, especially on the segmental and section level, and to try arranging them into types. Congruencebetween the biliary and arterial systems was searched for at three different levels of branching. The next aim was to find variations of the cystic artery with special attention to its origin and number. The corrosion casts, which anabled the three dimensional study of the internal liver structures were made according to our original method. The frequency of arterial and biliary variations in porta hepatis and at the sectional and segmental levels was determined. The first chapter deals with variations of intrahepatic and proximal extrahepatic bile ducts. The types of confluence and their frequency were determined separately for the left, right, right anterior sectional, right posterior sectional and common hepatic ducts. The study showed that biliary variations are quite frequent, especially in the right hemiliver. Some variations of practical importance for segment-oriented liver resections or living-donor liver resections were found that could cause postoperative complications, such as bilomas, prolonged laboratory signs of cholestasis or partial atrophies of the remnant liver after resections. The second chapter deals with the arterial pattern in the left hemiliver. The variability of arteries is very high according to the number as well as the origin of vessels for the left hemiliver. There were up to three arteries present, originating from the proper hepatic artery or the left gastric artery (replacing left hepatic artery) or the right hepatic artery. On the segmental level we found one artery supplying segment 2 and segment 3, respectively, in more than 85% of cases. However, segment 4 was supplied by one artery only in 39% of cases.
